Jaden Smith Says He's Struggling With Anxiety During Coronavirus Pandemic

“I'm just stressed about everything, and it's really crazy.”

Singer and actor Jaden Smith spoke on how he’s coping in quarantine amid album preparations during the global coronavirus pandemic.

While discussing Willow Smith and Tyler Cole’s recent collaborative album, The Anxiety, with Beats 1 radio host Zane Lowe, Jaden said their project drove home how “anxiety is going through the roof for everybody.”

  • “I'm just stressed about everything, and it's really crazy,” the 22-year-old admitted. “It doesn't happen to me too much, but when it does, it happens. It's very strong.

He added, “sometimes it's work-related, and then sometimes, you can really see that it's that true, genuine anxiety, where it's just like anything and everything.”

His method for dealing with his anxiety is to talk about it with those in his circle.

“I feel like we’re all being aware of the mental health issues in the world right now because we’re all being isolated with ourselves. We are very much so being confronted with our thoughts. Some people are okay with that and some people aren't.”

  • Last week, Jaden released a new single, “Cabin Fever,” that he recorded in quarantine, and announced he’s gearing to drop the  third installment of his The Cool Cafe: Cool Tape mixtape series. One of the revelations amid this spur of creativity was his decision to just go by his first name instead of his full name.

“I realized that Willow changed her name to Willow at some point in time, and that she was no longer Willow Smith. If you look Willow Smith up, it’ll still come up. But then it took me a while to see that it was just Willow,” he explained, “And I was like, ‘Yo. That’s so strong. You feel like you don’t have to say your last name. You’re just Willow.”

  • He also highlighted how late rock icon David Bowie famously adopted multiple alter egos to differentiate his various creative pursuits from others, noting  “I create different characters for myself.”

“That’s also one of the reasons I love Bowie so much,” Jaden continued. “It's like, Jaden, that’s music and Jaden Smith, that’s 501(c)(3), that’s acting in movies. I wanted to just make that little distinction there, just a little bit.”
