Larry Hoover and NBA YoungBoy Included in Latest Round of Pardons
NBA YoungBoy and former Chicago gang leader Larry Hoover are among the most headline-grabbing names on a newly released list of pardons and sentence commutations issued this week by President Donald Trump.
Last March, the 24-year-old rapper, born Kentrell Gaulden, was released from prison earlier than expected after serving time on fraud-related charges. The emcee’s official release date was set for April, but with good behavior, the Louisiana native made it home a few weeks early, with a pardon in tow.
The update comes just as NBA YoungBoy is set to hit the road for his MASA (Make America Slime Again) Tour, which kicks off on September 2nd in Dallas and wraps up on October 19th in New Orleans.
As for Hoover, while the co-founder of the Gangster Disciples didn’t get a full pardon, he did, however, receive a significant commutation.
Hoover was already serving a 200-year state sentence for the 1973 murder of William “Pooky” Young when federal charges in 1997 added six life terms to his record.
Prosecutors alleged that Hoover continued to control the gang’s operations from behind bars, leading to his transfer to the ADX Florence supermax facility in Colorado. The new commutation trims down that lengthy federal sentence, though specifics of the reduction haven’t yet been made public.
Both cases are now drawing renewed attention, as legal teams, supporters, and critics assess what these decisions could mean moving forward.
