1-Year-Old Fatally Shot By Police in Mississippi Walmart Parking Lot

A routine shoplifting response escalated into a tragedy that left one child dead and another person critically hurt.

A one-year-old boy was killed after police in north Mississippi opened fire on a vehicle in a Walmart parking lot. The shooting, which unfolded Sunday in Senatobia, has triggered outrage from locals, questions about the use of force, and demands for answers from the child’s family.

According to NBC News, Police said officers responded to a shoplifting report at Walmart, where they found two adults and a young child leaving the store and heading toward a vehicle. Investigators said the driver then tried to drive in the direction of officers, nearly striking one, before an officer fired at the car as it fled.

The child, later identified as Kohen Wiley, was pronounced dead at a hospital. A family member was also critically injured in the incident. No officers were reported seriously hurt, and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is handling the case.

His mother, who has not been charged with any crime, says she was trying to communicate to officers that there was a baby in the car,” said civil rights attorney Ben Crump in a statement Tuesday. “They fired anyway, leading to the death of an innocent 1-year-old. We intend to seek justice for baby Kohen and the life that was stolen from him.”

Walmart said it is cooperating with investigators and is deeply saddened by what happened at its Senatobia store. The store is about 40 miles south of Memphis, placing the case in a region where police violence and public safety concerns often draw intense scrutiny.
