NBC Affiliate Opts Not to Air The Playboy Club

Mormon-controlled station says show causes brand conflict.

Upcoming NBC series The Playboy Club hasn’t aired yet and already it’s stirring controversy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBC’s Salt Lake City affiliate KSL-TV has chosen not to air the network’s upcoming fall drama, citing objectionable content. On Monday, the Utah station said that The Playboy Club, which stars Naturi Naughton, Eddie Cibrian and Amber Heard and is set in “a 1960s-set club where crooners, mob bosses and politicians mingle among Chicago’s elite,” doesn’t fit with its mission.

Owned by Deseret Media Companies, the station is controlled by the Mormon church, whose mission is to “champion values that have been cherished by good people from diverse backgrounds for centuries.”

“The Playboy brand is known internationally,” said KSL president and CEO Mark Willes in a statement. “Everyone is clear what it stands for. We want to be sure everyone is clear what the KSL brand stands for, which is completely inconsistent with the Playboy brand.”

In response, NBC said in a statement: “While we are disappointed with KSL's decision, we are confident that the show will find another home in the Salt Lake City market."

The Playboy Club is set to air Mondays at 10 pm in September.
