Cop Pepper Sprays, Punches, Twist Girl's Arm During Curfew Arrest

Did a dramatic arrest, caught on tape, go too far?

Posted Oct. 9, 2007 – "Put your hands behind your back," a south Florida policeman pleads with a  15-year-old girl who struggles with the officer after being arrested for breaking the city's curfew. "Ma'am, don't resist me... You're going to get hurt," he continues. But what happens next is so shocking that you have to see it to believe it.

The dramatic video of the incident shows Fort Pierce, Fla., police Officer Daniel Gilroy – after repeatedly warning his suspect to stop resisting arrest – twisting Shelwanda Riley's arm, punching her, then pepper-spraying her in the face. The punch and the pepper spray came after Shelwand bit the officer on the wrist, the video shows.

WPBF-TV in West Palm Beach, Fla., reports that in addition to breaking curfew, Shelwanda allegedly was carrying a garbage bag full of new clothes with tags still attached.
