Thomas D. Williams Sr., Wendy Williams’ Father and Educator, Dies at 94
Thomas D. Williams Sr., the father of television host Wendy Williams, has died at the age of 94, family members confirmed Sunday.
The news was shared by Wendy’s niece and journalist Alex Finnie, who posted an emotional tribute on Instagram that included a montage of family photos set to Stevie Wonder’s “As.”
A longtime educator and published author, Thomas Williams was described by relatives as a steady, thoughtful presence whose work and love anchored the family. Finnie’s post praised his intellect and devotion to education and history, and followers offered condolences as the family processed the loss. His wife, Shirley Williams, died in 2020 at age 85.
The timing of Williams’ death is particularly painful for Wendy, who has spent recent years under a court-ordered guardianship amid highly public legal battles and questions about her health and autonomy.
Wendy traveled to Miami last year to celebrate her father’s 94th birthday, amid contested claims about whether she would be allowed to visit because of restrictions imposed by her guardian. Wendy has denied claims about her cognitive state and has sought to challenge parts of the guardianship, though the case has generated complex legal and medical back-and-forth. As of now, Wendy and her official representatives have not issued a public statement about her father’s passing.
Family members described Thomas’s decades-long work as an educator and published author as central to his legacy — a man who mentored students and supported community programs. No funeral plans have been announced.
