Jerrod Carmichael Recalls Being Rejected By Tyler, the Creator
Jerrod Carmichael is unafraid to show all aspects of his life, including when he shoots his shot, and it goes wrong.
In the debut episode of “The Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show,” on Friday (March 29), Carmichael revealed that he had begun to have strong feelings for his “best friend” Tyler, the Creator, who has been open about his fluid sexual orientation. Eventually, he shared his feelings to Tyler in a text and everything between them got weird.
“I fell in love with my best friend. 1 out of 10, don’t recommend,” Carmichael said in the show during a portion of his standup routine. “I knew I had to tell him. Things started getting kind of weird between us. I had these feelings… So I texted him."
“I remember saying, ‘I know you didn’t ask for this, but somewhere down the line I developed feelings for you and I don’t know what to do with that,’ he continued. “Then I immediately turned my phone off and went into therapy.”
“My therapist was thrilled. He was so excited! He was like, ‘Man, this sh*t never happens in real-time,” he joked as the audience burst into laughter.
When Tyler responded, it wasn’t what Carmichael had in mind.
“He sent me a voice note. I was so nervous,” Carmichael said. “It was like six seconds… He said, ‘Hahahaha, you stupid bitch.’ And I don’t really know what that means.”
As he patiently waits for Tyler to respond, Carmichael said, “Part of me wants to play musical chairs on Grindr the day of." He then invited Tyler to accompany him to the 2023 Emmys.
Just days before the awards ceremony, Tyler responded to the invitation with a text that read, “Dammmm, I shoot all day. Thanks, tho, that is lit.”
Later in the episode, Carmichael asks Tyler to have an on-cam conversation about their relationship to clear the air about how things got awkward between them.
“It’s because I told you I had feelings for you, and we didn’t talk about it, ever,” Carmichael said during the convo. “That was, like, weird. I don’t know if it was just too awkward to talk about or just too… I don’t know. I feel like you left me hanging out there a little bit.”
When Tyler attempts to remember his response, Carmichael reminds him of what he texted.
“You laughed and called me a stupid b*tch,” Carmichael said.
“I did,” Tyler laughed. “Yeah. I did. And I think I just, like, brushed it off. Getting news like that and then avoiding it is a way to avoid change.”
Tyler explained that Carmichael’s confession of love was “a lot to download.”
“I still don’t know how to respond,” he said. He regretted not staying in touch with Carmichael.
New episodes of “The Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show” air every Friday on Max.
