More Than 1,400 Dead After Earthquake in Nepal

Government declares state of emergency.

The country of Nepal has been left devastated after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake rocked the mountainous region — the worst to hit the country in 80 years — and killed more than 1,400 people. Hundreds of buildings and centuries-old temples have been destroyed by the quake, and countless lives left in disarray.

Nepal police report that at least 1,457 people were killed, with the death toll expected to rise. Twenty-nine districts have been designated as crisis zones, the Home Affairs Ministry says. 
News of the natural disaster has yielded an outpouring of concern and calls for help from the international community, including several celebrities. Sanaa Lathan, Sugar Ray Leonard and La Toya Jackson are among those who have tweeted about the quake to their millions of followers.
Lathan is encouraging her fan to "make a donation to help the victims of #NepalEarthquake" by visiting InternationalMedicalCorps.org.
