2022 NAACP Image Awards: 5 Funny Comedy Series Nominated for ‘Outstanding Writing’
2021 had some of the best comedy series to date. With shows like Insecure and many others like the feel-good sports comedy Ted Lasso and the journey of two quirky best friends in Blue in Green, there was something for almost everybody, thanks to some seriously outstanding writing.
However, these five next episodes resonated with viewers in a way others a still struggling to do. Though they touched on challenging topics, these writers made sure to crack a joke or two. Ahead of the 53rd NAACP Image Awards, here are the five funniest comedy series nominated for outstanding writing.
Ashley Nicole Black - Ted Lasso - "Do the Right Thing"
“HIDE YOUR BEERS!” Is heard as players of the West London Soccer Club as they prepare to take a photo with Nora, who unequivocally carries this episode with her witty and charming character development.
In this particular episode, which references the critically-acclaimed film by the same title by Spike Lee, the team’s owner is faced with a difficult task when she’s asked to fire a player who refused to do a campaign for one of the team’s sponsors due to the company’s problematic background. In the end, the “right” decision is made.
Issa Rae - Insecure -"Everything's Gonna Be, Okay?!"
Issa Rae empowers Black women using her infectious humor and unique flare. She’s an inspiration to many, from an award-winning web series to producing and acting in her own HBO Show series, Insecure.
Leann Bowen - Ted Lasso - "Lavender"
Ted Lasso follows the life of an American Football Coach who moves to England to coach Soccer and attempts to win over the English with his optimism as he learns the sport.

Maya Erskine - Pen15 - "Blue in Green"
Pen15 is a comedy show following two seventh-grade girls who are best friends. They do everything together while learning about who they are. Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle will have you holding your stomach from laughter with witty jokes and childless banter.
Temi Wilkey - Sex Education - "Episode #3.6"
Nothing can go wrong when a group of young adults with hormones becomes sexually active, right? Sex Education follows the lives of English high school students who, with the help of a parent, can learn and explore their sexual beings. In this series by Netflix, many things can happen, but one thing’s certain, you’re in for a good laugh.
