Big K.R.I.T Teams Up With Raphael Saadiq for Cadillactica

Rapper talks shying away from sampling beats on new music.

With his second album, Cadillactica, about to drop in November, Big K.R.I.T is opening up about how he’s grown from Live From the Underground and what fans can look forward to.

“People don't necessarily expect singles from me,” K.R.I.T told Elliot Wilson in the first part of their CRWN interview. “They expect full bodies of work. I think if I wanted to get to a point where I could actually grow in my music, I had to almost step away from sampling so much and start making the kind of music that people wanted to sample.”

With Cadillactica your favorite country cousin learned how to master creating hit records while focusing more on lyricism than the art of beat making. For his first single, “Pay Attention,” he teamed up with Rico Love, one of music industry’s top producers/songwriters. The second will also feature assistance from another veteran producer, Raphael Saadiq.

“Working with Raphael also gave me the opportunity to write,” K.R.I.T said about his next single. “And so when I was writing the song you can hear my voice different. It's clearer. I have a different kind of energy on it because I'm not so tired by making the beat, writing the hook."

He may have shied away from producing the sounds on the album, but not before he set the record straight in April on “Mt. Olympus.” K.R.I.T. adopted his own version of Big Sean's “Control,” unleashing four minutes of lyrical assassination on naysayers and hip hop culture as a whole. The track was meant to be the first official single on the album but could not get clearance due to legal issues with the sampled beat. It will be featured on the album in a new version mixed by DJ Dahi.
