Remy Ma Appeal Denied

The rapper's conviction was upheld.

It looks like the hip hop community will have to do with one less female rapper. The New York State Court of Appeals upheld Remy Ma's conviction on Thursday (Feb. 24), so the former Terror Squad femcee will have to remain in jail for now.

Remy Ma, whose real name is Remy Smith, is serving an eight-year prison sentence at Rikers Island for the Manhattan shooting that left Remy's then friend injured. In 2007, a jury found Remy guilty on weapons and assault charges stemming from the incident. The defense appealed the conviction on the grounds that the judge didn't properly inform jurors before they rendered their guilty verdict. The appeal went all the way up to New York State's highest court, but unfortunately for Remy, it was rejected.

At the time of her conviction, Remy was at the height of her success. As one of a handful of female rappers, she had released her solo debut There's Something About Remy the year before. In May 2008, Remy Ma wed her boyfriend rapper Papoose while she was incarcerated. The two were reportedly working on a collaboration album.
