2023 NAACP Image Awards: Get Familiar with The Hilarious Nominees for ‘Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series’

The pool of talent includes Brian Tyree Henry, Kenan Thompson and more.

The 2023 NAACP Image Awards nominations are officially here, and some of Hollywood’s biggest stars and projects are in the running for the prestigious recognition. Ahead of this year’s ceremony, we’re getting to know our nominees and some of the best performances from the past year that made us laugh and kept us on the edge of our seats.

So as we gear up for one the biggest celebrations of Black excellence set to take place live on Saturday, February 25th, 2023, at 8:00 PM ET on BET, get familiar with the hilarious nominees for “Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.”

  • Brian Tyree Henry / Atlanta

    Rising actor Brian Tyree Henry is one of Hollywood’s fastest-rising stars. For four seasons, fans knew Henry for his  portrayal as rapper Paper Boi in the critically acclaimed series Atlanta,  a role that earned the seasoned actor an NAACP Image Awards nomination for “Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.” After making his debut performance in the Shakespeare in the Park production of Romeo and Juliet, Henry made several appearances in various films and television shows, including  Boardwalk Empire, How to Get Away with Murder, Barry Jenkins' romantic drama film If Beale Street Could Talk, and more. His most recent work includes the David Leitch-directed action comedy film Bullet Train starring Brad Pitt, Sandra Bullock, Michael Shannon, and more.

  • Deon Cole / black-ish

    Multitalented comedian and actor Deon Cole quickly became a fan favorite thanks to his role as Charlie Telphy, co-worker and adulthood best friend of Andre Johnson, played by Anthony Anderson on the award Golden Globe-nominated series Black-ish. Cole made his debut on the hit show as a recurring character for the first three seasons before being promoted to the main cast until the show ended after eight seasons. The role has earned him several recognitions and a nomination at this year’s ceremony.

    However, Cole has been racking up awards well before Charlie’s debut. Behind the scenes, the writer earned two Primetime Emmy Awards for his contribution to late-night talk shows The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien and Conan, the latter of which also earned three Writers Guild of America Awards nominations.

  • Kenan Thompson / Saturday Night Live

    Kenan Thompson is in a lane of his own.  After a successful career in sketch comedy as a child actor, the longtime funnyman who appeared in several successful shows and films, including the popular  Nickelodeon movie Good Burger, Thompson returned to sketch in 2003, starring on the late-night variety series Saturday Night Live. He ultimately became the longest-tenured cast member in the show's history.

  • Tyler James Williams / Abbott Elementary

    Many fans may know Tyler James Williams for portraying a young Chris Rock on the hit comedy series Everybody Hates Chris from 2005 to 2009. Since then, he’s appeared in several hit projects, including Disney Channel original movie Let It Shine and The Walking Dead. Most recently, he landed a spot on the Quinta Brunson-created show Abbott Elementary, earning him his first Golden Globe nomination and win for his role as Gregory Eddie. In addition, he is up for an NAACP Image Awards nomination for that same role.

  • Williams Stanford Davis / Abbott Elementary

    William Stanford Davis is no stranger to the acting world after having made over a dozen appearances in television shows and movies, including, Snowpiercer, Ray Donovan, Lincoln Heights, and more, the seasoned actor is providing tons of laughter on the hit comedy series Abbott Elementary as the school's eccentric custodian, Mr. Johnson.
