2022 NAACP Image Awards: 5 International Songs Heating the Global Airwaves
Now and then, a musical artist will release a single so powerful that it’s felt across the world. The artists nominated at the 53rd Annual NAACP Image Awards for “Outstanding International Song” did just that, whether it was Wizkid and Tems teaming for “Essence”, which dominated the summer, or Tiwa Savage and her collaboration with Grammy Award-winning singer Brandy for their single “Somebody’s Son.” Ahead of this year’s ceremony, check out these five songs that are not only nominated but heating the global airwaves.
Wizkid feat. Tems and Justin Bieber - "Essence"
Following the success of their 2020 hit “Essence,” Grammy Award-winning pop star Justin Bieber joined the Nigerian-based stars for its follow-up remix. The single was officially released on August 13, just one day after WizKid teased fans with “something special.”
Fireboy DML - "Peru"
Initially released on July 20, 2021, after drawing attention to himself after reaching number on the UK Afrobeats Singles Chart, Nigerian singer Fireboy DML reached out to Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Ed Sheeran for its subsequent remix.
Tiwa Savage feat. Brandy - "Somebody's Son"
Nigerian soul singer-songwriter teams up with her musical idol Brandy for this Afrobeat-inspired feel-good record “Somebody’s Son” off her highly anticipated EP Water & Garri.

KiDi - “Touch It"
Singer-songwriter and producer KiDi initially found success in 2017 with his single “Odo.” Nearly four years later, the African star proves he still has a knack for creating melodics with some inspiration from his Ghanaian roots mixed with some r&b and dancehall.
Omah Lay - "Understand"
Multitalented Nigerian rapper, singer, and songwriter Omah Lay got his start in the music industry producing for other artists. However, in 2020, he quickly garnered attention following the release of his debut EP Get Layd.
The video for “Understand” finds the star in a tense exchange with men armed with machetes, knives, and bats. It soon cuts a romantic scene revealing Omah Lay made it out unharmed.
