Ice Cube Shares ‘Boyz N Hood’ Throwback Ahead Of One-Year Anniversary Of John Singleton’s Passing

“John was brilliant. I miss him.”

On April 28, 2019, the Black film community lost a light with the passing of director John Singleton.

  • The celebrated filmmaker died after he was taken off of life support following a stroke that left him in a coma. With the one-year anniversary of his passing just days away, Ice Cube took to social media to commemorate his dear friend’s legacy. The West Coast rap icon posted a throwback, black-and-white photo from their time together on the set of Singleton’s 1991 classic debut film, Boyz N Tha Hood

Alongside Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding Jr., Laurence Fishburne, Angela Bassett, and Morris Chestnut were top-billed for the coming-of-age story set in Los Angeles’ notorious Crenshaw neighborhood.

  •  It would be this film that cemented Singleton in cinema history at the 1992 Academy Awards as both the youngest person and the first African-American to ever be nominated for Best Director.

In the photo Cube shared, he’s seen sitting in the driver’s seat of a car with Gooding Jr. standing next to him while the late director appears to be relaying instructions.

  • “Rehearsing the Crenshaw scene for Boyz N Tha Hood,” Cube reminisced, seemingly referring to the movie’s iconic drive-by scene.

He continued, “John never told us that it would be real gun fire during the scene. All reactions were real. John was brilliant. I miss him.”
