‘Everything I Do Is For Him’: Brittney Griner on Raising Son Bash With Wife Cherelle

The WNBA star discussed the everyday work of parenting, healing, and why her son is the reason for everything now.

"They said as soon as you see them, everything that you thought mattered just goes out the window,” Brittney Griner told CBS Sports about seeing her little boy for the first time. “That's literally what happened."

At the Sundance premiere of “The Brittney Griner Story,” Griner offered a candid look at life since becoming a mom, and told People that raising her son Bash — whom she and wife Cherelle welcomed in July 2024 — has dramatically reshaped her priorities.

Griner described parenting as “so rewarding,” joking about the sleepless early days but saying that coming home to Bash’s smile makes her “day just good.”

In a June 2025 press conference, Bash made his post-game debut, perched on mommy's lap as he played with a Hot Wheels car. The WNBA star shared that her son is central to her motivation, saying he is her “why” and that many of her choices now revolve around creating a stable, loving home.

Griner and Cherelle married in June 2019 after meeting as Baylor students, and the couple has been deliberately protective about family life while sharing select milestones with the public. They released Bash’s first photos in late 2024, and those images painted a picture of quiet domesticity, complete with a sweet nursery, late-night feedings, and falling asleep in the baby’s room. Griner and Cherelle credited routines and mutual support for helping them navigate a post-trauma chapter that included healing and reestablishing a sense of normalcy.

Griner’s openness about motherhood adds a human, domestic layer to a very public life. As she balances professional basketball, activism, and family, her message is clear: parenthood has given her new joy and a renewed sense of purpose. Seeing this softer, family-centered side of Griner reinforces the ongoing redemption arc of recovery, resilience, and reinvention that has shaped her public persona.

She shared, "Everything I do is for him. I’ll be proud of him once he’s able to really realize everything. ... I do it for him, [I] want to provide for him and show him the right way to do things.”
