Issa Rae is known as the creator of the Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl. But Rae is far from awkward today, she landed her own show on HBO in which she will write (along with Larry Wilmore, correspondent on The Daily Show and creator of The Bernie Mac Show) and star. Deadline.com is exclusively reporting, "The project focuses on the awkward experiences and racy tribulations of a modern-day African-American woman." In addition, Rae will co-executive produce the series.
The upcoming HBO series is one of several projects Issae Rae is tackling. She is penning her memoirs for HarperCollins and she recently wrote a pilot for Shonda Rhimes, the creator of Grey's Anatomy and Scandal.
The rising star, who was recently named to Forbes "30 Under 30" to watch list, blew up after the success of her Web series The Misadventures of the Awkward Black Girl. The online series, funded through donations on Kickstarter, has two seasons under its belt and has earned Rae a cult following among both fans and industry types. It has not yet been confirmed whether Awkward Black Girl will return for further seasons.
Congrats to Issae Rae!
