The 2021 Soul Train Awards nominees for this year’s “Song of the Year” category are in and it looks to be an intense competition featuring several heavy hitters including H.E.R., Bruno Mars, Anderson.Paak and Silk Sonic and many more.
In past years, artists such as Beyoncé have received these honors with songs like “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” and Pharrell Williams with “Happy.” Ahead of this year’s Soul Train Awards, take a look at this year’s nominees and their songs in the running to win “Song of the Year ” at this year’s celebration of R&B and soul.
BLXST ft. Ty Dolla $IGN & Tyga ”Chosen”
The singer-songwriter, producer and rapper recruited fellow L.A. heads Ty Dolla $ign and Tyga for this single off the deluxe version of his critically acclaimed debut solo EP No Love Lost, which garnered more than 150,000,000 streams since its release on Dec. 4, 2020. The laid-back sound of all Blxst and Ty, alongside Tyga’s verse makes this record the anthem for any summer kick back and maybe even “Song of the Year.”
Bruno Mars, Anderson .Paak, silk sonic “Leave The Door Open”
From funny memes and TikTok performances, Bruno and Anderson’s song swung the musical doors wide open making its presence known from day one. “Leave the Door Open” quickly went from the No.3 to No.1 spot in its first week on Billboard’s Hot 100 songs chart, earning Bruno his eighth and Anderson’s first number 1 track.
H.E.R. “Damage”
This is another record that beautifully samples another classic hit. H.E.R. called upon “Making Love In The Rain” by Herb Alpert featuring Lisa Keith & Janet Jackson to make this sonically perfect R&B tune off her debut album, Back of My Mind. The track earned the Grammy-award winner her sixth No.1 hit.

Jazmine Sullivan “Pick Up Your Feelings”
R&B and soul songstress Jazmine Sullivan is over it, in this record about finally being done with a toxic relationship. The song comes off the singer-songwriter’s first project in nearly six years, since her 2015 effort Reality Show. “Pick Up Your Feelings” peaked at No. 7 on Billboard’s Hot R&B Songs chart.
Wizkid Ft. Tems “Essence”
Though initially released during the spring, this soulful, Afrobeat-backed collaboration from Wizkid and Tems was an obvious fan favorite this summer. From COVID-friendly gatherings to Sunday brunch meetups at your favorite restaurant with your crew--this song was being played everywhere!
Yung Bleu ft. Drake “You’re Mines Still”
A lot can be said about Yung Bleu’s melodic tune “You’re Mines Still.” This track features a guitar loop from the classic record “Shape of My Heart” from Sting-- a sample you’ve probably heard more times in rap music than anywhere else outside of a department store. Needless to say, it’s a catchy tune that almost forces you to sing along to its smooth lyrics of getting back an ex you’ve wronged.
