Ts Madison Opens Starter House for Black Transgender Women

The grand opening was held on Trans Day of Visibility.

Media personality Ts Madison is giving back to Black trans women in a big way.

On Monday, March 31, on Transgender Day of Visibility, the “Zola” star held the grand opening of the reentry space Ts Madison Starter House in metro Atlanta. In partnership with nonprofit NAESM, Inc., the location will provide transitional housing for up to four Black women who were formerly incarcerated at a time, according to The Atlanta Voice.

As a Black trans woman who previously survived homelessness through sex work, Madison told the outlet that she felt a “sea of emotions” while listening to speeches at the launch event.

“There’s going to be many souls, many bodies coming in and out. Like I was asking myself, ‘do I really want this?’ And after hearing what I meant to people’s lives, I was like, ‘There’s nothing else I would do,’” she said.

The house is also part of A New Way of Life’s SAFE Housing Network, and Madison announced her plan for its location at last year’s NAESM conference. Madison previously lived in the home but wanted to adapt it for women facing temporary hardship.

The NAESM, Inc. website calls the starter house “a transformative investment in the future of Black trans women.” In addition to housing, the space also provides access to healthcare and wellness services, psychological assistance along with business plan development and project management sessions.
