Tina Turner Celebrated With Bronze Statue In Her Childhood Hometown

The sculpture, created by artist Fred Ajanogha, captures the electrifying energy that made Turner a global superstar.

Tina Turner’s hometown has officially given its queen her flowers, but in bronze.

Over the weekend, a 10-foot statue honoring the rock and roll legend was unveiled in Brownsville, Tennessee, the rural community just outside Memphis where she grew up, according to ABC News.

The statue stands tall in a park just steps away from the high school Turner attended as a teen. Sculptor Fred Ajanogha, who brought the piece to life, said he wanted to capture the essence of Turner in full performance mode, from the movement in her body, the way she gripped the mic with her finger pointed like she owned every note, and her signature hairstyle, which he compared to as a “mane of a lion.”

According to representatives, the “Simply the Best” icon died of natural causes at her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland, BET.com reported.

It had been known that Turner also battled several illnesses throughout her life, including intestinal cancer, four decades of high blood pressure, and a kidney transplant.

Designer and longtime friend Stephen Sills shared how the famed singer wasn’t afraid of death, BET.com reported.

“She told me two years ago, she said, 'Stephen, I'm ready to go anytime. I'm not scared of death,” he said.

“‘I've had a wonderful last part of life. I've enjoyed it, but I'm tired,'" he recalled her saying.
