Wendy Williams’ Guardianship Stays in Place After New Medical Evaluation
Wendy Williams’ court-appointed guardianship will remain in place for now, following the completion of an extensive medical evaluation. According to legal documents reviewed by People, the television personality underwent a variety of tests and scans, including brain imaging, to assess her neurological condition. Doctors have reached a formal opinion on her diagnosis, though the specifics were not disclosed in the paperwork.
In 2024, her medical care team confirmed that Williams has been living with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and aphasia since 2023. Her guardian’s attorney has requested that the current stay be extended until November 3, giving the presiding judge time to decide if the guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, will continue her role and whether Williams still needs a guardian at all.
The filing notes complications in the case, with attorneys for members of Williams’ family, her ex-husband Kevin Hunter, and others signaling plans to challenge both the guardianship and Morrissey’s position. The update comes months after Williams was removed from her assisted living facility by the NYPD in March and taken to the hospital, an incident she later discussed on Good Day New York.
During the segment, Williams called in and spoke with Rosanna Scotto and claimed that she had recently passed competency tests “with flying colors,” with caretaker Ginalisa Monterroso insisting the former talk show host “is not incapacitated.” Williams has been under guardianship since May 2022, covering both her finances and health, but her relationship with Morrissey has been contentious.
This legal battle has spilled into multiple cases, including a lawsuit filed in June by Hunter alleging Williams has suffered abuse, neglect, and financial harm under her guardianship. That filing demands a new impartial guardian, unsealed court records, and $250 million in damages.
