Man Pleads Guilty of Trying to Kill Obama and Black Children

A 19-year-old Arkansas man who believed in “White power” could spend a decade in jail after pleading guilty Thursday to conspiring to shoot to death Barack Obama and dozens of African-American schoolchildren.

During Thursday’s plea hearing, Paul Schlesselman said that on Oct. 20, 2008, he transported an unregistered short-barreled shotgun and a .357-caliber magnum handgun from Arkansas to Tennessee that he planned to use to assassinate several Black school children and then Obama, according to prosecutors. Schlesselman, who has been in jail for the past 14 months after telling authorities of his plans, said he met another man, Daniel Cowart of Tennessee, who would help him carry out the scheme.

Both men believed in White power, Schlesselman said.

Cowart has pleaded not guilty in the case. His attorney said that the 21-year-old Cowart "disavows any affiliation or participation in a hate crime basis of belief and that has been the case since his incarceration 14 months ago.

Schlesselman  is scheduled to be sentenced in April.
