Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama are honoring the life and legacy of Rev. Jesse Jackson, calling him “a true giant” whose decades of activism reshaped American politics and expanded opportunities for generations.

In a joint statement released February 17, the Obamas said they were “deeply saddened” to learn of the civil rights leader’s passing and reflected on his more than 60 years of advocacy.

“For more than 60 years, Reverend Jackson helped lead some of the most significant movements for change in human history,” the statement reads. “From organizing boycotts and sit-ins, to registering millions of voters, to advocating for freedom and democracy around the world, he was relentless in his belief that we are all children of God, deserving of dignity and respect.”

Rev. Jackson, who died at 84, was a central figure in the modern civil rights movement and a two-time Democratic presidential candidate. His 1984 and 1988 campaigns made history and broadened the political imagination of what was possible in national leadership.

President Obama directly acknowledged that impact in the statement.

“In his two historic runs for president, he laid the foundation for my own campaign to the highest office of the land,” Obama said.

Michelle Obama also shared a personal connection to Jackson’s work that predates her time in the White House. According to the statement, she “got her first glimpse of political organizing at the Jacksons' kitchen table when she was a teenager,” underscoring the family’s longstanding ties to the Chicago-based civil rights leader.

The Obamas described Jackson’s efforts as expansive and global, highlighting his work not only in voter registration and grassroots organizing but also in international advocacy for freedom and democracy.

“Michelle and I will always be grateful for Jesse's lifetime of service, and the friendship our families share,” the statement continues. “We stood on his shoulders.”

The tribute concludes with condolences to the Jackson family and the broader community.

“We send our deepest condolences to the Jackson family and everyone in Chicago and beyond who knew and loved him.”
