Deborah Cox Lands Lead in The Bodyguard Musical

The singer is set to take on Whitney Houston's role as Rachel Marron.

Debroah Cox and the late Whitney Houston now have another connection in the name of music. After providing the vocals for the icon's hits in the Angela Bassett-directed biopic, Whitney, Cox is now set to play Houston's breakout movie role of Rachel Marron in the musical production of the 1922 Oscar-nominated film The Bodyguard.

According to the Huffington Post, the musical, which has been adapted for the stage by Birdman director Alexander Dinelaris, kicks off its North American tour in the fall of 2016. It first premiered at London's Adelphi Theatre back in Dec. 2012 with X-Factor winner Alexandra Burke in the lead female role.

Those who have seen the film, but have yet to view the musical can expect the classic hits that they've grown to love. Cuts like "Saving All My Love," "One Moment in Time," Queen of the Night," and the timeless, "I Will Always Love You" will all be featured.

For Cox, this is just the tip of the iceberg of the upcoming season, as she has a slew of other projects lined up. In addition to the Bodyguard gig, she is also preparing the summer release of her new album Work of Art, and is currently starring in a musical based on the life of Josephine Baker. On another note, she is also set to co-host the Clear Channel Spectacolor's simulcast of the 2015 Tony Awards on June 7.

She shared her excitement for all of the projects with the Post. "I am honored to be chosen to co-host and perform with Justin Guarini for The Tony Awards in Times Square simulcast event," she wrote. "I am also honored to represent two of the most iconic and historic women of the 20th century with the Broadway bound Josephine project and now the Bodyguard."

The rest of the cast, as well as additional tour cities for The Bodyguard will be announced at a later date.
