Several members of hip-hop are still struggling to wrap their minds around the senseless death of rising Brooklyn rap star Pop Smoke on Wednesday (Feb. 19).

  1. Amid the mournful day, Atlanta trap trailblazer Jeezy has stepped forward with valuable words of wisdom for the hip-hop world. According to earlier reports, multiple masked men invaded the Hollywood Hills home that the 20-year-old was staying in and fatally shot him. While no one has  been arrested in connection to the incident yet, Bay Area news station ABC 7 reported that law officials suspect that the attack may be gang-related. Suspects were reportedly seen fleeing from the home on foot, according to Page Six. Thus far, a motive has not been stated.

Nicki Minaj, who appeared on the remix of Pop Smoke’s hit single, “Welcome to the Party,” expressed her grief on social media over Pop Smoke’s untimely passing moments after the tragic news broke.

“The Bible tells us that jealousy is as cruel as the grave,” she wrote on her official Instagram page. “Unbelievable. Rest in Peace, Pop.”

In light of this speculation surrounding the circumstances of Pop’s death, Jeezy took to Instagram where he delivered a message for young people trying to get ahead in life. Instead of looking at what others got, he called on them to look within to build themselves up.

“Yo, we gotta do better, man. What we doing?” he began. “At the end of the day, we all kings. We ain’t in the jungle. You ain’t gotta kill your brother to eat. Them days should be long behind us. They print money every day. Every day. Apply yourself. We got to do better.”

He called on anyone listening to focus on fostering love and community, instead of hate and jealousy.

“We kings, baby. Let’s be kings,” he challenged. “We got to get it together, man. We just lost Nipsey to some ignorance and we back here again. Come on man. I’m rooting for you. I want to see everybody win. Real talk.”
