In a devastating twist of fate, news broke early Wednesday morning (Feb. 19) that Pop Smoke was shot and killed in an L.A. home invasion. He was 20 years old with a promising future ahead.

  1. A fast-rising rap neophyte from the Brooklyn drill scene, Pop Smoke simultaneously introduced himself and made a mark on the industry with his hit single “Welcome to the Party.” That single would ubiquitously become an anthemic staple of 2019’s rap scene. A string of collaborations with the likes of Nicki Minaj, Travis Scott, and Quavo soon followed. His profile rose even higher after his second mixtape, Meet the Woo 2, cracked the top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart.

  2. As such, Pop Smoke’s untimely death has brought back flashbacks of other rap stars whose lights were dimmed much too soon. In a chilling turn of events, Heavy.com noted that the Pop Smoke passed away at the same hospital as one of rap’s most revered icons: the late Notorious B.I.G.

Pop Smoke, in critical condition from gunshot wounds, was reportedly rushed to L.A.'s Cedars-Sinai hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

  3. At only 24-years-old, Biggie was shot and killed on the night of March 9 while leaving the Soul Train Music Awards in 1997, according to The Undefeated.  His murder has since remained unsolved.

This anecdote hits harder because Pop Smoke recently staked his claim as the next King of New York. Pop Smoke was raised in Canarsie, a neighborhood in Brooklyn; which is the same borough Biggie hailed from.

    Long live the Woo.
