This past weekend, Jill Scott celebrated the 20th anniversary of her Grammy-nominated debut album, Who Is Jill Scott. The R&B soulstress took to social media to share a special message with her fans thanking them for their support throughout all these years.
She posted a nearly 5-minute long video where she recounted both the good and not so good hardships she experienced during her journey through the music industry.
“It is 20 years today since we met, and I’ve kind of been on one all day. I’m having a moment,” an emotional Scott begins. “I want to tell you that no matter what you do, if it’s genuine to you, you’re always going to come up against some kind of obstacle or somebody that doesn’t understand, doesn't want to see you glow, or win in anyway.”
The R&B singer shared she learned this lesson at a young age after an incident where she accidentally stumbled upon a notebook containing negative remarks about her when she was in the sixth grade.
“I was cleaning desks and I found a notebook. On the inside, it said, ‘I Hate Jill Scott Club.’ There were members. They kept minutes. There was a treasurer. I just put the notebook back and kept pushing,” she recalled. “There’s always been something or somebody that doesn’t like you or hate you even.”
She then recalled another incident with an unnamed New York radio host from 20 years ago who tried to shake her confidence. “The radio host, he was cool with me or whatever. We had a good time. I left and heard through the grapevine that he had called me a ‘fat pork chop eating b***h that would never sell another record.’ I was like damn son!” she reminisced.
At another radio station, Scott was warned that the hosts were difficult to work with. To her surprise, they were actually cordial during their interview and even seemed supportive of her. “I got in the car and I’m heading back to Philly feeling, ‘Ok, it was scary, but job well done.’ I’m in the car listening to the radio and they played the sound of a cow mooing under everything I said,” Scott said.
In spite of it all, the “Golden” songstress still thrived even with people actively working against her.
“I have been lied on. I’ve been cheated. I’ve had someone hack into my phone. I’ve gone from ‘Queen’ to ‘Thot’ in hours. I've been sued. But I’m still here. I’m still here and I’m still me.” Scott continued.
To sum up her feelings, she thanked her loyal supporters for sticking by her side for the past twenty years despite what was going on around her. “I’m so still grateful for every person that has organically gravitated towards my energy. You don’t have to but I thank you for doing it. This has been a beautiful 20 years. Here’s to 20 more. Thank you so much,” she concluded.
In the Instagram post’s caption, she also expressed her sincerest appreciations for the musicians that supported her career, writing, “There’s soooooo many people that put their hearts, energy and efforts into [Who Is Jill Scott?]. Thank YOU. Whoever is reading this, THANK YOU too.”
