Silk Sonic first became a power group in 2017 when Anderson .Paak was an opener on the European run of Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic World Tour. The two artists clicked and collaborated at the famous Abbey Road Studios in London, recording several tracks that ended up on Paak's album Ventura. Funk legend Bootsy Collins named the band Silk Sonic after hearing their work and he hosted their debut single, “Leave the Door Open,” which took the world by storm. The sky's the limit for this talented duo that can produce, write, and perform at the highest level.
Here are the five reasons this electrifying super team is nominated for three BET Awards this year, ‘Best Group’ ‘Best Collaboration,’ and ‘Video of the Year’:
Ever since he jumped on the scene in 2010 with "Just the Way You Are," the lead single from his debut studio album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans, Bruno Mars has topped charts around the world. His versatile songwriting shone across all genres and led to huge collaborations with artists like Snoop Dogg, B.o.B. and Wiz Khalifa. With icons like Michaell Jackson and Prince inspiring him, Mars has refused to let anyone put him in a box and continues to wow audiences with songs, videos and live shows that make us want to get up and move.
Whether they are cranking out records in the studio or going crazy on stage Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars have the talent and experience to make magic on wax. .Paak’s unique sound stood out to producer extraordinaire Dr. Dre when he was still mostly unknown. Wowed by his unique sound and look. Dre hand-picked Paak to perform on his 2015 comeback album, Compton.
No matter what stage either of these artists is on, whether together or as solo artists, their high-energy performances are always sure to keep the audience moving from start to finish. Whether it’s on an intimate private stage or in front of millions at the big game, they always give the people what they want.
Anderson .Paak never follows the crowd. His unique approach to making music has always been rooted in funk, which leaked into his Hip Hop and R&B tracks to form a sound we’ve never heard before. Collaborating with a risk-taker like .Paak shows Bruno Mars is open to experimenting with his sound. No matter what, Mars always keeps it funky on any of the tracks he touches.
Neither artist steps on the other's toes, whether in the studio or on the stage. In live performances, Mars has all the room in the world to be a singing and dancing machine while .Paak has the freedom to join in or hold it down on the drums. Mars’s dance skills are internationally-known and .Paak has produced and played for the biggest artists in the world, so it makes sense that Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak gel as such a dynamic duo when they team up to form Silk Sonic.
