Aisha Tyler Feels No Regret in Choosing Career Over Motherhood

The hosts of The Talk discuss shame that hangs over career-driven women.

Aisha Tyler is here to tell those who criticize women who’ve chosen career over children that she has no regrets over her personal decision to do just that. In a recent episode of The Talk, Gabrielle Union’s comments on the shame that looms over childless women were discussed amongst the co-hosts, and Tyler chimed in with her story.

"I was with someone at 19 and I was married at 23 and I didn’t want kids when I was in my 20s,” Tyler said. “I wasn’t mentally prepared to take care of them, I was focused on my career. And then when I got to be in my 40s and I thought about having kids, I wasn’t able to have kids naturally. I don’t regret it.”

Tyler reiterated that if she had wanted kids at 25, she could have had them, but she chose to build her career until it was too late for her to conceive naturally. “These were my choices and I don’t regret them,” she said. “I won’t apologize for choosing my career over kids.”

When guest host and YouTube personality GloZell Green shared her story of needing to find a surrogate in order to have a child and fielded questions from others wondering why she’s waited so long, Tyler said there should be no shame attached to waiting until you’re ready.

“I mean that’s the nature of things,” she said. “There’s nothing wrong with saying I wasn’t ready then, I’m ready now, I can’t do it, so let’s find another way.”
