Matthew Knowles Speaks on "Difficult" Beyoncé Split
It’s been an emotional first few months of 2013 in Beyoncé’s world: triumph on the Super Bowl stage, tears in her Life Is but a Dream documentary and controversy over her latest music release. Now, father and former manager Mathew Knowles pulls a few notes out of his own heart strings.
"I’ve never revealed this much in an interview before... Normally I hate to talk about anything personal, but it would be a lie if I did not say it has been difficult,” he said recently, in an interview with the U.K. media outlet The Sun, referring to stepping down as his eldest daughter’s manager.
"It was hard for me to let her go — it was hard for both of us to let each other go. And let’s be clear on that. She didn’t let me go, we both let each other go. That’s a big difference."
The announcement of the two dissolving their management relationship came in 2011, after Bey took a brief "hiatus" from the industry and just before she released her fourth studio album, 4, and revealed her pregnancy at the MTV Video Music Awards. It was mired in slight controversy amid (denied) allegations that he was pilfering brand Beyoncé money.
"This was not a normal ending of a business agreement. This was a dad and a daughter and it was incredibly painful and it had some difficulties,” he said in the recent interview.
"But I try to always have a positive mind about things and you got to do it the right way."
Beyoncé addressed the difficulties in her documentary: "I’m feeling so very empty because of the relationship with my dad," she said. "And I’m so fragile at this point and I feel like my soul has been tarnished."
But, she added, "I needed boundaries, and I think my dad needed boundaries."
Matthew Knowles continues to promote Bey on the site for his Music World Entertainment.
