Mannie Fresh has a long history with Lil Wayne, going as far back as when they were coming up in Cash Money together. So when fans heard that the pair would be reuniting for Wayne’s often-delayed Tha Carter V, we knew the songs were going to be special.

During his interview with Montreality, the New Orleans producer-rapper opened up about some general topics (childhood memories, jobs he had growing up and favorite cartoon characters) and also gave an update on Tha Carter V. “We kind of went back to that original Cash Money feel,” he says. “What you grew up on. The Mannie Fresh sound that you knew Wayne and Mannie did — the chemistry. It’s more of that original, that first Carter.

While Mannie Fresh didn’t have much to say about the current situation of Cash Money, in which Wayne’s lawsuit against Birdman has no resolution yet, he did reminisce on the good things about his former label. “It was some kids who took nothing and turned it into something,” he says. “And it’s the dream that everybody dreamed about. And it actually came true, so I think that’s the most beautiful thing. That’s iconic.”

Mannie Fresh produced the intro to Tha Carter V, and has recorded about five to six songs with Wayne for the album.
