Would you like a mixtape?
Erykah Badu has one for you that drops next week. Ms. Badu revealed in a Noisey interview that she will drop a new mixtape, But You Can’t Use My Phone, which is titled after a classic line in her 1997 single “Call Tyrone.”
The mixtape is fronted by Badu’s “Hotline Bling” remix, but the Texas native admits that she’s been “mostly procrastinating” since her last album dropped five years ago. “I’m writing all the time, but recently I got the bug back,” she said. “When it comes, it comes, and I can’t force it, but recently I got it back with “Hotline Bling” and all the other things I’ve been experimenting with.”
Badu, who will host this year’s Soul Train Awards, also speaks about Seven Benjamin, her son with André 3000. The teen earned a credit on mom’s “Hotline Bling” remix and has been writing and recording a lot. "He wrote his first song and got his first credit on one of Gwen Stefani’s albums. A song called 'Bubble Pop Electric.' He’s always been a creative kind of kid. Very good with coming up with lyrics. He has impeccable taste in music. He’s very talented with picking up instruments. He has a few credits on my albums as well, New Amerykah Part One, specifically. He’s one of those talented people that I really respect and admire, and he happens to be my son.”
She also mentions her one-woman show opening in Dallas this month, why the Black Lives Matter movement is “necessary,” and the Drake/Meek Mill beef that won’t go away. "Loved it," she said of Drizzy vs. Meek. “That’s what hip hop is about to me. I liked that. That’s the way we’re supposed to handle it! I encourage it."
