If you’ve spent enough time on social media, there’s a good chance you’ve seen the term “glow-up” appear with increasing regularity. But what does it actually mean?

A glow-up can cover a lot of things and such going from the ugly duckling to a beautiful swan, or starting at a minimum wage job and transitioning into a powerful career. 

In this case, we’re calling out celebrities and brands who have had a great year. Whether overcoming an obstacle or just took the year by storm. We are highlighting the celebrities who demanded our attention in 2019.

  1. Lil Nas X

    Lil Nas X went from sleeping on his sister’s couch and putting songs on Soundcloud to being a breakout star of 2019. He won a CMA, was nominated for a Grammy, won an MTV award and a BET award. It’s safe to say that this 21-year-old had one of the best glow-ups of 2019.

     

  2. LIZZO

    Lizzo is having a great year! She closed out SNL with an epic performance and was named entertainer of the year by Time magazine all while being unapologetically herself. All of her hard work and sleepless nights paid off.

     

     

  3. Jordyn WOODS

    Jordyn Woods is the comeback queen. She turned a situation that was perceived negative into an opportunity for the world to get to know who she really is. Jordyn landed acting gigs, an international eyelash collaboration, a clothing collaboration with Boohoo and launched a new fitness company. 2019 was a good year for Jordyn!

     

     

  4. Spirit Airlines

    Spirit Airlines was once named one of the worst airlines to fly. But this year, they announced that their new aircraft will feature 20% more leg room for their clients. Now that is a glow-up!

     

  5. Megan Thee Stallion

    Summer 2019 was dubbed "Hot Girl Summer" thanks to our H-Town Hottie, Megan Thee Stallion. Meg is a college student and a platinum selling artist. 2019 was definitely her year. 

  6. Summer Walker

    Summer Walker is a breakout star. The Atlanta-bred R&B singer came on the scene in 2018 and took it by storm. Her Over It album was streamed over a million times, and her 2019 tour sold out in minutes. Summer's transparency about having social anxiety made fans fall in love with her even more, making 2019 a great year for the artist. 

  7. DaBaby

    2019 was a great year for DaBaby. After signing his record deal, his hit rose to the top of the charts. He collaborated with Megan Thee Stallion on her "Cash Sh*t" song, which they won a BET Hip-Hop award for. DaBaby was even nominated as Bet New Artist for the 2020 Grammys.

  8. Lebron James

    LeBron James was named athlete of the decade, which he deserves. But 2019 in particular was a great year for him. He started the Promise Academy Charter School in Ohio and launched a production company to produce content. His HBO docu-show, The Shop, has had plenty of success, and the Lakers' stock went up since he's joined. LeBron's son Bronny is also following in his father's footstep. He's the star of his Sierra Canon High School and was named the MVP of his championship game. 

  9. Nike

    Nike has had a major glow-up in 2019. The mega brand has collaborated with more women this year than ever before, resulting in more sales. Their Kolin Kap sneakers sold out in under one minute, and Virgil's Off-White x Nike sneakers are still one of their biggest collaborations in terms of revenue. Their legacy Air Jordan brand is still at the top of their priority, even expanding into making women's styles.  

  10. Christopher John Rogers

    2019 was a great year for 24-year-old fashion designer Christopher John Rogers. The artist was the winner of the 2019 CFDA awards. The SCAD alum showed at New York Fashion Week and has since become a favorite amongst celebrities such as Cardi B and Sza.
