Michael Henderson, Distinguished Bass Player And R&B Singer, Dies At 71

He is widely known for his vocals on “You Are My Starship.”

R&B singer Michael Henderson, widely known for his vocals on “You Are My Starship,” has died. He was 71. The distinguished bassist had been admitted to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta in early July for an undisclosed illness.

News broke about Henderson’s passing on his official Facebook Page on Tuesday (July 19).

“Singer, Songwriter, Bass Innovator, Music Producer, Father and Son Michael Henderson has peacefully made his transition surrounded by family and loved ones today at his home, Atlanta Georgia…,” the post read. “Bless his heart and soul...  He touched the lives of many and returned that love through his many live concerts, music recordings, social media, interviews and incessant touring which he loved…”

Born in Yazoo City, Mississippi, on July 7, 1951, Henderson was raised in Detroit before catching the attention of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, the Dramatics, and more.

Also appearing as bassist on several albums with Miles Davis, Henderson’s vocals were heard on Norman Connors “Valentine Love” the classic R&B single “You Are My Starship.” He also released a number of solo albums, beginning with 1976’s Gold. His final solo album was 1986’s Bedtime Stories, according to Stereogum.

Fellow bassist and Parliament-Funkadelic icon, Bootsy Collins, expressed his condolences on his social media accounts, responding to the passing of Henderson.

“Dangit, we lost one of the Real One's our Bass brother Mr. Michael Henderson (July 7, 1951-July 19,2022) was an American bass guitarist and vocalist,” he captioned his post. “He was known for his work with Miles Davis, Dramatic's, Stevie Wonder & many others. Prayers going out to his family & friends!”

Marshall Thompson of the Chi-Lites added, “Another sad note my good friend Michael Henderson, has Pass R.I.P a great entertainer that traveled all around the world with The Chi-Lites and Aretha Franklin for many many years, He will be miss [sic].”
