Racist Florida Couple Who Went Viral for Attacking Black Canvasser, Charged

The couple also faces several unrelated felony charges.

A couple from Orange County, Florida, faces criminal charges after a video showing them using racist language against a Black solar utility worker went viral on TikTok over the summer.

The incident, which occurred in late July in Hunter’s Creek, involved Steven Edwin Wiley and Cheryl Ann Pyle

The video, posted by canvasser Antavis Johnson, showed Wiley and Pyle leaving their home and directing explicit, racially-charged verbal assaults at Johnson as he worked the neighborhood.

In the clip, Wiley can be heard threatening and using racial slurs. “Get your Black a** the f*** out of here,” he shouted. “You come back again, I’m gonna hang you.” He also went on to call him a “Dumb f****** n*****,” while Pyle echoed her partner's sentiments.

News 6 reports that the original video racked up more than 13 million views before being removed.

After the verbal outburst, the outlet also reports that Johnson attempted to seek help at a neighbor’s house; however, the couple continued to follow him.

"I was thinking about my daughter. I didn't want to put my hands on nobody, I just wanted them to get their steam out," Johnson said to WESH. "I stayed as calm as possible so it wouldn't flip or I wouldn't get in trouble. I was also working, so I'm representing another job."

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office reported that Wiley and Pyle later claimed Johnson provoked them after flashing a middle finger and swearing, which triggered the confrontation.

However, the questionable, racist behavior didn’t end with Johnson. Deputies say Wiley became uncooperative and continued making racist comments even during their investigation.

Both Pyle and Wiley also face separate felony charges. In September, Pyle was arrested on charges of aggravated abuse of an elderly person. The “person” is her elderly stepmother. Wiley is facing felony charges of false imprisonment, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, felony battery, and battery domestic violence.

As for the incident with Johnson, Wiley and Pyle have been charged with assault evidencing prejudice, and are scheduled to appear in county court on November 25.

Both remain in jail.
