Jay Z Responds to Police Brutality With 'Spiritual' Protest Song

It seems like everyone is speaking out.

Jay Z’s been dropping music more frequently as of late, however none have been more socially conscious than his newest song.

Entitled “Spiritual,” Hov’s latest relays the struggle people of color go through in regards to encounters with law enforcement. On the track he spits, "Got my hands in the air, in despair / Don’t shoot, I just wanna do good." According to the artwork for the song, Jay says it’s actually not a new song but perfect for the time we’re going through.

"I made this song a while ago, I never got to finish it," he wrote of "Spiritual" on Tidal, where the song is streaming. "Punch (TDE) told me I should drop it when Mike Brown died, sadly I told him, 'This issue will always be relevant.' I'm hurt that I knew his death wouldn’t be the last...... I'm saddened and disappointed in THIS America — we should be further along. WE ARE NOT."

Alton Sterling was shot multiple times in the chest Wednesday (July 6) after police pinned him down and discovered he had a firearm in the back pocket of his pants. Philando Castile, another African-American whose death sparked protest, was shot and eventually died after police believed that the identification he was reaching for inside of his car (which they requested he brandish) was a firearm. Both cases have raised questions as to whether the men were actually a threat to harm the officers who engaged them.

Punch also presumably tweeted about the song when he said prior to its release, “I believe music heals. I believe that.”
