Posted Oct. 30, 2007 – A break-up took a tragic turn Friday when a junior at historically Black Coppin State University in Baltimore was murdered by her ex-boyfriend who then jumped to his death.

Damon Smith, 27, allegedly confessed to killing his girlfriend, Veronica Fludd, pictured above, after she severed their relationship.

According to Maryland State Police, about four hours after Fludd, 26, was found stabbed to death in her aunt and uncle’s home, Smith ran his car into a pole in Owings Mills, Md., attempting to kill himself. He was taken to Mercy Medical Center, where he confessed to Fludd’s murder, according to investigators. 

At about noon Sunday, Smith slipped out of a pair of handcuffs, overpowered an officer guarding him, punched out a window at the hospital and leaped 10 stories to his death.
