Janet Jackson is opening up about her personal style with Allure Magazine. Below, find out how the fashion and music icon categorizes her fashion choices, plus learn why she loves the body-positive movement of today.

There’s no denying Janet Jackson’s influence on fashion. If you need receipts, just wait for Halloween and take note of the long list of celebrities and fans who recreate iconic moments from the star. You know the vibe!

Continuing her reign as a fashion trendsetter, Jackson exuded style and sophistication on the cover of Allure’s February issue. Dressed in an oversized Rick Owens puffer coat, the cover star wowed onlookers with her ageless beauty and eye-catching braided bun, sculpted by Larry Sims.

“I was never a girly girl. I was always a tomboy,” Jackson explained to the publication about her fashion aesthetics. “It was always about pants, suits, even as an early teenager. I remember when my brothers got their star on the Walk of Fame and other awards they got, and I look back on pictures and I always had on a suit with a tie, a bow tie, or suspenders.”

The singer-songwriter went on to explain that she often turned to oversized clothing and colors like black to ensure her body was never exposed, citing she felt “most comfortable” covered up.

Today, things are a lot different with the surge of body positivity moments—and the 55-year-old superstar loves it!

While chatting with the outlet, Jackson also opened up about why she admires stars like Lizzo, who openly celebrate their curves. “[Women have gotten] comfortable in their skin, in their size, in being full-figured and I love that, as opposed to back in the day,” she shared. “You had to always be thin and always look a certain way. And now it’s all accepted and it is all beautiful and I absolutely love that.”

She went on to share that the Janet era was all about self-acceptance and “embracing” and “trying to learn to love me for me, my body, all of that.”

Jackson added, “It was something very tough, very difficult. But I’m glad I walked through it. I’m really glad I got in. It was a way of accepting and loving, accepting yourself and your body.”

For those who worry about age, she offers this ageless advice that keeps stress from affecting her natural beauty: “Everyone would always want to stay young and this and that, but it’s inevitable. I mean, we’re all going to get there.”
