Kamala Harris Tells Her Side of the 2024 Race, And It’s Angering Her Democratic Colleagues
Kamala Harris is sharing her side of the 2024 campaign in a new book, 107 Days, which gives readers a behind-the-scenes look at one of the most unusual election cycles in modern history, and it’s making her democratic colleagues upset.
Harris only became the Democratic nominee after President Biden dropped out of the race in July 2024 under heavy pressure from party leaders. That left her just 107 days to mount a presidential campaign. The book explains how she navigated that challenge and the obstacles that came with it.
Jamal Simmons, who served as Harris’s communications director during her time as Vice President, said Harris “has a right to tell her story” and told The Hill he believes readers will see both her struggles and her successes. “I think people will read it and see she had a lot of hurdles to jump,” Simmons said. “And many of them she jumped well, and some she had a hard time with.
Some allies say the book could have gone further in addressing the reasons behind her campaign’s defeat. “It could have had a little more introspection and self-reflection,” one ally said.
The memoir is drawing comparisons to Hillary Clinton’s 2017 book “What Happened,” in which the former Democratic nominee also tried to explain a tough loss.
Not everyone in the party is worried about Harris speaking out. Democratic strategist Anthony Coley said it is better for her to be candid now than to wait until another election cycle. He said Harris is “peeling back a layer” and showing the honesty people want to see from public officials.
One strategist told The Hill they only wished Harris had shown this same candor during the campaign, suggesting that it might have helped her connect with more voters at the time.
Harris’s memoir is out today.
