“Finding Your Roots” is returning for its 12th season, and the lineup is star-studded. 

Exclusively announced by People, the guest stars for the upcoming season include Spike Lee, Brittney Griner, Danielle Deadwyler, Sanaa Lathan, Delroy Lindo, Chris Paul, Lizzo, and Wiz Khalifa. 

“I am thrilled to announce another season of “Finding Your Roots,” filled with inspiring stories from our wonderful guests that further show us that at the level of the genome, we are all 99% the same despite the forces that try to divide us," Henry Louis Gates Jr. said in a press release. 

“It’s especially important to all of us at “Finding Your Roots” that our viewers know, despite the loss of federal funding for public television, our show and PBS are not going anywhere. We encourage everyone to support PBS by becoming a member of your local PBS station if you aren’t already, and continuing to spread the word about the great work PBS is doing.”

The show had a major bombshell dropped in 2018, with Kerry Washington finding out her father wasn’t her biological father – something she revealed in her memoir, “Thicker Than Water.” 

After a conversation with her parents and Gates, they came clean to Washington to reveal the shocking news. 

“When I got this information, I was like, 'Oh. I now know my story,” she told People at the time, sharing how it “really turned my world upside down.” 

"I didn't know what my story was, but I was playing the supporting character in their story. My parents were not thrilled about me writing this. This is really kind of me working to understand my life up until now, given this new information that I have that, in many ways, felt like sort of the missing puzzle piece. I really started to have so much more love and compassion and understanding for my parents. Taking this deep dive into our family history made me put myself in their shoes and think about the things that they've had to navigate and what they've been through and what they've sacrificed. And it really made me feel closer to them.”
