Report: Baltimore Officer Said Freddie Gray Fell Ill With 'Jailitis' After Arrest

One of the cops charged in his death mocked the 25-year-old's plea for medical attention, source reveals.

One of the charged officers in the case of Freddie Gray's death has spoken out. According to the Baltimore Sun, special task force findings revealed that an unidentified officer who was in the police van during the 45-minute ride mocked the 25-year-old's pleas for medical attention, claiming he had "jailitis."

The publication also revealed further details on the happenings of the incident, reporting that, in addition to the officer's suggestion that the then dying Gray was faking his illness, the camera in the van was broken.

This upsetting claim made by the officer and camera phone footage of his arrest has prompted many to compare his death to that of Eric Garner, who was also pleading for medical assistance. Both were yelling "I can't breathe," Gray while begging for an inhaler. Both requests were ignored.

The Sun agreed not to publish the informaion until Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby had made a final decision whether or not to prosecute the officers involved in the incident. On Friday (May 1), Mosby publicly announced that six officers will be charged with crimes ranging from false imprisonment to second degree murder for their alleged participation in Gray's death.

While the peaceful protests in Baltimore continue today, the city-wide curfew has been lifted by the city's mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. The curfew had been in effect for five nights following violent protests.

"Effective immediately, I have rescinded my order instituting a city-wide curfew," Rawlings-Blake tweeted. "I want to thank the people of Baltimore for their patience."
