BET Awards 2022: Kirk Franklin And Lil Baby Win Best Gospel/Inspirational Award

The legendary gospel artist talked about ‘passing the baton' to the next generation in his acceptance speech.

Legendary gospel artist Kirk Franklin and rapper Lil Baby won the Best Gospel/Inspirational Award at the BET Awards 2022 for their collaboration on We Win, off the soundtrack for Space Jam: A New Legacy.

In Franklin's acceptance speech, he talked of "passing the baton" and graced his award to Maverick City Music as the "next generation."

“I’ve been blessed to have an opportunity to win this award before,” said Frankin who holds the record for this category with five previous wins.

“One of the things I’ve always had a problem with when it comes to our elders is a lot of times they will hold a position until they die, and they don’t pass the baton,” he continued. “And they die with the baton.”

Franklin turned behind him and handed his award to Maverick City Music whose members were standing with him on the stage, anointing them “the next generation of gospel music.”

Lil Baby told Rolling Stone  that "Working with a legend like Kirk Franklin was cool." He added, "I’m proud this is a song that my grandma and kids can listen to, while at the same time I’m still being authentically me. I’m always looking to grow as an artist, and to be a part of the #1 Gospel song in the country…It’s a blessing."
