Michelle Obama Won Her First-Ever Grammy For ‘Becoming’

Michelle’s win makes a third for the household following Barack’s previous two wins.

It's official!

Michelle Obama can now add Grammy Award winner to her resume. Michelle received the award for Best Spoken Word at the 62nd annual Grammy Awards for the audio companion of her New York Times bestselling memoir, Becoming.

  • She beat out Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys (Beastie Boys), Eric Alexandrakis (I.V. Catatonia: 20 Years as a Two-Time Cancer Survivor), John Waters (Mr. Know-It-All) and Sekou Andrews and The String Theory (Sekou Andrews & The String Theory) for the prize in the same category.

This marks her first Grammy win.

  • Our beloved first lady was previously nominated for the accolade when the Recording Academy first announced its 2020 class of nominees back in November of 2019, which came just after the one-year anniversary of her book’s release. However, Michelle’s win should come as no surprise given that her memoir sold over two million copies in North America just two weeks after its release in November of 2018, and eventually sold 10 million copies globally. In turn, the book spawned a 21-stop international book tour.

  • Michelle’s win makes a third for the Obama household following Barack’s previous two wins. The former president won the same award on two occasions for his books Dreams From My Father and The Audacity of Hope in 2006 and 2008, respectively.

This also makes Michelle the second former first lady to win the same category after longtime politician Hillary Clinton won in the same category for the audio recording of her book It Takes A Village in 1997, according to TODAY.com.

BET send its congratulations to Michelle Obama!
