On November 28, Grammy-award-winning singer and songwriter Maxwell was honored at the 2021 Soul Train Awards with the"Legend" award for his contribution to music. The esteemed honor was presented by fellow Soul Train Awards recipient, R&B star, and 201 Soul Train “Best R&B/Soul Female Artist” Jazmine Sullivan.

The presentation featured several of our favorite moments from the entire night, including an emotional speech about his upbringing and how he explained what winning the award meant to him.

“We had food stamps. We had low-income housing. But we had a radio, and the radio was the window to my dreams,” he said. “To be able to stand here before all of you and to be part of the community of R&B and soul music is truly the award that I’ve always wished for, but this literally is blowing my entire mind.”

He continued, “I want to shout out Haiti, and I want to shout out Puerto Rico. I want to shout out the fact that as a Caribbean child, who was born in Brooklyn, to be able to be included in the experience of the civil rights southern movement, not just the Caribbean movement, for it to catch up, and for us to finally be included as Caribbean Black people in the story. This is what this means to me.”

The  neo-soul pioneer later wowed us with an explosive performance featuring his classic and new singles medley. The music legend inserted a last-minute freestyle honoring the 50th anniversary of Soul Train during a collection of hits including “Bad Habits,” “Lifetime,” “Sumethin’ Sumethin,” and his new single, “Off,” expected to be featured on his third and final installment for his trilogy blacksummers’NIGHT. He ended the night with his signature song, "Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder)".
