Photos of Black students from Pretoria Girls High protesting the institution’s discriminatory hair code went viral over the weekend. The schoolgirls decided to take a stand against archaic rules regarding hair after one student was pulled aside by a teacher and told that her afro was "too unruly."

This incident was the last straw. The pupils say staff constantly insist they straighten their hair and tell them they are not allowed to wear their afros. In the school’s code of conduct on rules about hair, afros are never specifically mentioned. Yet the girls told Gauteng Education Minister Panyaza Lesufi that some of the staff  "tell them they look like monkeys, or have nests on their heads."

The hashtag #StopRacismAtPretoriaGirlsHigh has been used more than 150,000 times on Twitter in support of the girls’ plight.

According to BBC News, school rules are currently suspended while an independent investigation takes place into the allegations. The school has not commented.
