‘#ShePersisted’: Mitch McConnell's Attempts to Silence Elizabeth Warren Reading Coretta Scott King’s Letter Became a Loud, Proud, Slogan

Everyone needs to know what MLK's widow had to say about Trump's attorney general pick Jeff Sessions.

On Tuesday, Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) took to the senate floor to oppose attorney general nominee Jeff Sessions. Warren used an opposition letter sent by Coretta Scott King when Sessions was up for federal judgeship in 1986.

As she spoke the words of King, Senator Mitch McConnell silenced Warren by invoking Rule 19, which states, "No Senator in debate shall, directly or indirectly, by any form of words, impute to another Senator or to other Senators any conduct or motive unworthy or unbecoming a Senator."

  • Sen. McConnell abruptly interrupted Warren and silenced her from speaking on the senate floor for any debate regarding Jeff Sessions

  • In the letter that Warren read, Coretta Scott King opposed Sessions because he used his power to keep Black people from voting

  • When speaking of the silencing of Warren, McConnell said the following:

"She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted."

  • Without realizing it, McConnell's statement became the rallying cry for feminists everywhere

  • Throughout history, women who persisted despite being warned otherwise are responsible for some of the greatest accomplishments the world has seen

  • McConnell's action on the floor ignited a fire for people on twitter to remind the world what happened when #shepersisted

  • #Shepersisted is not just a phrase of the moment, but a mantra of the future
