Outrage After White Teen Admits She Lied About Being Abducted and Gang-Raped by Three Black Men

Many have compared the hoax to the story of Emmett Till.

A white teenager in Texas recently admitted that a prior claim that she was kidnapped and gang-raped by three Black men in ski masks was a lie. Earlier in March, Breana Harmon Talbott was reported missing by her fiancé. The 18-year-old later resurfaced at a local church and alleged she was a victim of rape.

When Talbott entered the church, she had visible scratches on her body and was only clothed in a shirt, bra and underwear. When she spoke with Denison police, Talbott said that she was abducted and taken to the woods, where “three Black males” raped her.

However, medical examiners “were unable to corroborate that Talbott had been sexually assaulted,” police told New York Daily News.

Two weeks after the report, Denison Police released a statement explaining the doubts that had arisen based on her account. On Tuesday night, Talbott admitted that her claim was fabricated.

She also admitted to harming herself to make it appear that she was scratched during the fictional attack.

Now, Talbott faces a misdemeanor charge of making a false report to a police officer.

“Breana Harmon Talbott’s hoax was also insulting to our community and especially offensive to the African-American community due to her description of the so-called suspects in her hoax,” police said in their Wednesday statement.

  • As a result of the hoax, many have become outraged at Talbott

  • Talbott's claims were used by white supremacists to fuel hatred toward the Black community

  • For many, this lie is similar to the story of emmett till
