Adam Sandler's losing streak continues. The A-lister faces yet another flop at the box office, where his latest film, Pixels, failed to take the top spot.
The family-friendly, CGI-heavy action-comedy brought in $24 million, well below expectations, and was defeated by Ant-Man, which drew $24.7 million in its second week. Pixels came in second place, and some are speculating that Thursday's shooting in a Louisiana theater (during a screening of Trainwreck) kept families away from the theater this weekend.
In third place was the animated film Minions with $22.1 million and fourth place went to Trainwreck with $17.3 million.
Southpaw, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Forest Whitaker and 50 Cent, went beyond expectations and grossed $16.5 million for a fifth place finish, largely due to a strong female draw and diverse audiences (45% of ticket buyers were African-Americans and Latinos).
Next week, Tom Cruise rides in on the wing of a jetliner in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, but will the one-time icon be able to bring the magic once again?
