Chadwick Boseman Is Marvel's First Black Superhero

Actor will play Black Panther in the 2017 film.

Marvel has taken a huge leap forward in diversifying its slate of superhero film franchises. Company president Kevin Feige announced during a press conference on Tuesday two new films in the works — one centered on a Black superhero, and the other on a female.
Feige announced Marvel's “Phase 3,” which includes 10 new films (featuring two Avengers sequels entitled Avengers: Infinity Wars Parts 1 and 2) and their release dates. The slate includes a Black Panther film, starring Chadwick Boseman as the hero. Boseman was joined on stage by his Marvel brethren Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans for the announcement.

“[Black Panther] is about how this isolationist country of Wakanda needs to meet the world,” said Marvel's Kevin Feige.

“I'm blessed to be part of this Marvel Universe and I look forward to making magic together,” said Boseman. The film will hit theaters in November 2017. A director has not yet been announced.

This will be the first time in the company's history a major film franchise will focus on a Black superhero. Earlier this year, Donald Glover was tapped to voice Miles Morales in Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors.
Marvel also announced its female superhero, Carol Danvers, who will make an appearance in 2018's Captain Marvel.
