President Macron Speaks on His Lawsuit Against Candace Owens
French President Emmanuel Macron said he had to file a lawsuit against Candace Owens to “defend his honor.”
If you are unfamiliar with the beef between the president of France and the…checks notes…the YouTube conspiracy theorist, let me explain.
For some reason, the one-time MAGA enthusiast decided to broadcast to her some four million subscribers that the president’s wife, Brigitte, is a man. Macron knew that he could’ve ignored the comment meant to disrespect his wife, but decided to go after punitive damages against the political commentator
“They advised us not to sue,” Macron told Paris Match magazine. “But it has taken on such magnitude in the United States that we had to act.”
Since last year, Owens, 36, has continued to push this conspiracy theory that Brigitte, 72, changed her gender. Owens doesn’t seem phased by the lawsuit as she’s continued to mock the Macrons and their libel action as “goofy” and a “vicious public relations” move to silence the truth.
“They’re talking about the identity of the first lady of France, of a wife, mother, and grandmother … It’s a matter of defending my honor,” the French president told the magazine.
Macron also noted Owens’ comments don’t exist in a vacuum as the MAGA movement has been adamant about using the “free speech” amendment only when it’s beneficial for them.
“Those who talk about this supposed freedom of speech are the people who ban journalists from the Oval Office. I don’t accept that,” he said.
President Trump’s staff has ignored members of the mainstream media, “including the Associated Press, Reuters and Bloomberg, from certain White House events,” while giving access to right-wing bloggers and publications that cover the White House favorably, The Times reports.
Owens “knew very well that she was using false news to cause damage, in the service of an ideology and with established connections with the far right”, Macron said.
Owens claims she is “fully prepared to take on this battle” which included a 22-count lawsuit lodged in Delaware by the Macrons’ US lawyers. Oh, and the first family of France is seeking punitive damages spreading “verifiably false and devastating lies”.
