Secure The Bag: The Cost Of ‘Netflix And Chill’ Just Went Up

Chillin’ isn’t cheap no more.

Sorry lovers, “Netflix and Chill” price just went up. You might as well just go to the movies. Just saying!

Starting in November Netflix will raise the monthly price for its standard tier from $10 to $11, and the price of its premium tier from $12 to $14, making this the largest price increase in streaming since 2014. Customers will start receiving notices on October 19 and be given a 30-day notice about the price increase, depending on their billing cycle. Yikes.

The good news is that, as of now, Netflix is keeping its $8 dollar basic tier. So if you don’t mind being able to watch standard-definition Netflix on one device, you're good. I am assuming that’s the “Chill” package, so people, don’t cancel all your after-hours Friday night dates yet.

This is the second adjustment made since May 2014, but it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise. People are shifting from cable to streaming, and they need to keep up. So in an effort to maintain its presence, Netflix has been devoting a lot of effort to creating original programming to keep their subscribers. But the making of House of Cards, I am sure, is not cheap. Netflix's goal is to spend $7 billion on new content next year. Which means more shows to binge watch your Saturdays away with. *Milly Rock*

Netflix released a statement addressing the significant price spike: “From time to time, Netflix plans and pricing are adjusted as we add more exclusive TV shows and movies, introduce new product features and improve the overall Netflix experience to help members find something great to watch even faster.”

Well, looks like Netflix is about to go through a major upgrade. People may actually decide to cancel the “Chill” enjoy a movie. Sike! For the new price, the expectation will be “Netflix and Chill FOR SURE.”
